Millville, NJ - Yuven Sundaramoorthy won his second race of the 2017 F1600 Championship Series season in an exciting photo finish at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Driving the No. 13 for K-Hill Motorsports, Sundaramoorthy won by .014 seconds over Team Pelfrey's Jonathan Kotyk. Another .081 seconds back, Matthew Cowley finished third to clinch the 2017 F1600 Championship Series title for Team Pelfrey.
"First off, my race win is dedicated to my cousin who was injured in the Las Vegas shooting," said Sundaramoorthy. "It was a good race. I fell back at the start but worked with Jonathan to catch back up to the lead. When we did, Zach (Holden) and Matt (Cowley) tangled and I worked with Jonathan trying to pull away from the field. We held it to the line and managed to get the win."
Said Cowley: "I was focused on putting consistent, clean laps in. I managed to catch up but since I was behind everyone, and the engine was getting hot. Getting to third from far back, I'm happy with that."
It was another dynamic all-green flag race for F1600 that lasted 20 laps. Of note, the last 209 race laps for F1600 drivers, dating back to July, have only seen six laps of full course caution time as Formula Race Promotions continues to provide a safe and competitive track environment.
Simon Sikes finished fourth in an impressive debut weekend in the No. 27 Mygale/Honda from Rice Race Prep, while David Osborne completed the top five in another Pelfrey car in round 19 of the 2017 season at the Thunderbolt circuit.
A mega Masters Class battle among three drivers came down to the last lap, with Mike Scanlan winning over John Dole and Dave Petzko.
While Championship leaders Cowley and Zach Holden escaped early in the race out front, the pack caught them with a mid-race battle ensuing. The title battle reached its climax when Holden and Cowley touched on lap eight in turn five.
Cowley would drop through the order, while Holden retired from the race with suspension damage ending his Championship hopes. Cowley charged back to third, also setting fast lap of the race. The resulting points distribution effects were enough to earn Pelfrey's Cowley the 2017 F1600 title.
